Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid follows the lives of the Riva siblings and the eye-opening moments revealed at their end-of-summer party in 1983. The novel weaves between the past and present, focusing on the relationships of each sibling and their father, a famous musician. As the present continues to escalate and secrets are revealed, the siblings are forced to confront the past and the effect of their legacy.
I love anything by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and this book is no different. Reid’s storytelling is so immersive that I constantly felt like I was being sucked into the 1980s and the intoxicated world of fame that engulfed the Riva family. While the buildup of the novel is a bit slow, Reid makes it all worth it with her fierce climax and the emotional depth she puts into her characters. If you’re looking for a good book to transport you back to summer or your next Taylor Jenkins Reid book to knock off your list, this is the one!
