Eragon by Christopher Paolini is the first in a series of four books called the Inheritance Cycle. This science fiction adventure takes place in a land called Alagaësia, and it starts with the main character, Eragon, who finds a stone in the woods. He later finds out that the rock is a dragon egg that soon hatches to reveal his dragon companion, Saphira. To truly enjoy this series, you have to read all of the novels of the Inheritance Cycle. As you go from book to book, you meet new dragons and their riders—some friends, some foes.

My favorite character in this story is Brom. He Is Eragon’s first mentor, a former dragon rider who is in hiding from the empire. (Spoiler Alert: You later find out that Brom is Eragon’s father. The fact that Eragon is not aware of this for a couple of books after Brom dies is unfortunate, but it makes Eragon even more thankful for all his father and mentor did for him.)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the whole series. I have already read it several times. One thing that may not be as appealing to some readers is that each book is more than 500 pages long.

Readers as young as middle schoolers to young adults will enjoy this book, as it is very engaging for me, and I think that it will be engaging for others as well. People who enjoy fiction and mythology will especially find these books appealing.
