Teaching adults to read and write would not be possible without volunteers just like you. No prior teaching experience is required. We provide free introductory online training and follow-up support and training. Our goal is to help you succeed and provide an amazing volunteer experience for every volunteer.
We have several different volunteer positions available, with different responsibilities and time commitments. You can take a look at our opportunities and begin the application process below.
One-on-one Tutor
One-on-one tutors are trained and then matched with a native speaker of English or a non-native English speaker. Tutors coach a minimum of a 90-minute session, two times a week at the library or virtually, using provided curricula.
Conversation Class Teacher
Conversation class teachers share their love of the English language through interactive and engaging conversation in a small group setting that is welcoming and respectful. Conversation teachers facilitate a minimum of one 90-minute session one time per week. Conversation classes include reading practice, writing, and speaking. Class themes include book clubs, English conversation, grammar and pronunciation, current events, and more. Classes may take place in a library or virtually.
Walk-in Tutor
Walk-In tutors assist learners one-on-one for 20 minutes each during a two-hour volunteer session. Walk-In Tutors help learners on a first-come, first-served basis on the topic of their choice. This can include but is not limited to, mail, bills, reading passages, computer applications, mobile phones, or conversations in which tutors gently and actively correct grammar, sentence structure, and/or assist with pronunciation. Learners may bring in their own material or use our resources. Walk-in tutors assist learners in person at a library.
Teacher’s Assistants
Teacher’s assistants help conversation class teachers with virtual classes. They manage Zoom controls (open and close the class, monitor chat, create breakout rooms), collect learner information such as email addresses and attendance data, email assignments to learners, and more. Proficient email and basic computer skills are a must. Familiarity with zoom is recommended, but we also offer training. Teacher’s assistants help facilitate a minimum of one 90-minute session one time per week.
Leamos Tutor
Leamos is an online class that teaches Spanish-speaking adults how to read and write in Spanish. Leamos is a Spanish-only curriculum, so the tutor must be a fluent speaker of Spanish and be able to read and write intermediate-level Spanish. Tutors coach a minimum of two 90-minute sessions per week.
